Until 2007, technical requirements on power generation and distribution infrastructure—which includes transformers and wind towers—were often overly accommodating to a range of protective coatings. Unfortunately, many of these failed to offer adequate protection for such demanding applications. In urban, coastal, and offshore areas with high levels of humidity, sulfur dioxide, and salinity, long-term performance frequently took a back seat to cost effectiveness and ease of use. With ISO 12944, everything changed.

ISO 12944-Corrosion Protection of Steel Structures by Protective Paint Systems provides guidance on the use of paint and coating systems for steel substrates. The standard categorizes six environments of increasing corrosivity from both an outdoor and indoor exposure perspective, identified from C1 to C5.

The global power generation and energy distribution industry has adopted the ISO 12944 standard as its objective performance criteria. Moreover, many major operators have added additional performance requirements based on ISO12944. All of these standards are designed to help specification writers and engineers objectively evaluate coating systems suitable for different environments.
